Ok here’s my question. I’m military and have about 5 years until I retire. I can basically pay the bills with my retirement at that time, so I’m looking at working in the real estate industry at that time (or prior if the opportunity arises). If you were starting out, and decided you’d like to work as a realtor, title company clerk, etc., which direction would you go? I don’t want it to be my next paycheck. It’s purely for the education.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I’m especially interested in both J.P. and Terry’s opinions.

Getting a R.E. license is a good way to begin. You will at the very least be aware of R.E. law in your state. Being licensed gives you the opportunity to hook up w/ a broker to list and sell properties for a fee.
You don’t mention an interest in investing for yourself, but I’ll assume that’s what you want to do.
Real estate is a people business. You’ll need to develop strong sales skills and interpersonal relations to be successful.
The key word here is MARKETING.
You’ll want everyone you know to associate you with R.E., and most importantly, those you don’t know.
If you do get licensed you’ll have a great opportunity to find deals outside of listings and sales, for your own personal profit. I don’t know what sort of disclosure you have to make to prospects or your broker when doing such deals so you’d have to check that out. Your access to mls would be a goldmine in itself. Hope this helps.
