When to set up PO Box - Posted by Terence

As a lawyer who spends a lot of time forming corporations and dealing with corporate representation I’d have to disagree with the last answer.

Actually, you can use a PO box as a business address. You just can’t use a USPS postal box. I have several businesses set up using mailing service postal boxes. The mail service must be authorized to accept service, which mostly is done when you authorize them to sign for you to receive packages. State law and company policy may differ somewhat but I use the UPS store in Washington (which I believe was mailboxes etc before UPS bought them) and have had no trouble whatsoever.

I had some trouble with the city initially about where I would post my city license but, being the smarta** that I am, I took a photo of my box with my state license taped inside and they shut up. The reality is that with a wireless connection and a cell phone, my office is everywhere.

To answer the core question, get the box, make sure they will accept service for you (and call you), form the LLC with the box addresss as a suite number and you should be good to go.

This might be a silly question but when do you set up your post office box. After you setup your corporation/LLC or before. And if you form your llc after you get your po box.
Do you use your home address on your po box.

Thanks for any info

You can use a PO box for a mailing address. Generally, however, you will need to designate an agent for service of process for the corp/llc that must be a phisical address where someone can accept legal service. You cannot personally serve on a PO box.
