In your case John, I would do the same.

My city has passed laws to require registration of rentals. I’m wondering what my options are here. I’ve got many registered, but the last time they walked through a rental (practically a new construction when it was finished), they found pages of things to fix. I’m not in the mood to play with the city forever.

requirement to register rentals?

The city I’m located in is forcing me to register my rentals…I’m going to court next week.

Can they force me to register the rentals?
I don’t mind registering them…it’s not cost prohibitive, but they don’t like me sooooo I get nailed with EVERYTHING to fix when they would normally be ok with it.
(It stems from me evicting non-paying tenants immediately and them calling the city.)

I’ve heard of other cities forcing this and getting sued…just fishing for some ideas.

Thanks,
James

You should check if there is an ordinance or city policy for you to register, and if this is applied to everybody. They cannot single you out because they don’t like you.
nearby city where I leave they will send you a business license application and bill to pay once they find out that you own a rental in their city.
This city also onetime told a motel owner who stop operating for a while for some reason that they cannot operate it as motel anymore but as an office bldg. Could you imagine the expenses converting a motel into an office bldg. My point is they sometime do it by ordinance, zoning change or eminent domain.
If they find your lot is a habitat of K-rat or some endangered species, you will not be able to build on it,in essense confiscating your hard earned money because land become useless if you cannot build on it. This is one hard fact about this business that we should be aware of and be very very careful when buying a property.Hard to fight people who get paid whethere they produce something or not. This people are getting paid for regulating us and sometime we lost use of our right to enjoy and use our property because of these bureaucrats and policies. They get paid while we suffer and most of the time they don’t care.

You need to join a landlord association or form one if there is not one. They sure seem to want info that is really none of their business

My City passed a law that all landlords had to supply names and addresses of everyone living in their rentals. This is supposedly to collect City tax from them. I question the violation of their rights to privacy and will resist as long as I can.
