Get hold of your old attorney, most places exempt interspousal transfers and that was probably the law, but just maybe some piece of paper was overlooked. When you say Chicago, I don’t think much of the people running the place and I don’t doubt someone is screwing up somewhere.
7 years ago my ex wife signed a QC Deed to me for our marital residence, as part of the divorce agreement. The form said “Tax Exempt” and the lawyer said no tax was due.
Now, I get a tax bill from the city of Chicago demanding $4110.10 for tax, penalty, interest and willful negligence.
Is this for real? At the time, transfers resulting from divorce agreements were supposedly exempt.
I did refinance the mortgage. (Purchase 180,000, mortgage, 172,00 at time of transfer.)so it was not a free and clear deed. I sold this year, and no liens appeared on the title. and now I live out of state.
Thanks,
matt
