The stock market went down again, third quarter housing prices went down again, and nobody can raise prices so inflation(as nobody has any money) is low and the prime interest rate has fallen in conjunction with the Fed Funds rate. Anybody with (devalued) cash can get bargains from real estate though autos and all the way down to computers, etc. The best investment now is safes and firearms of the assault weapon type. Yes, presidential elections do change the investment playing field. The rules change and I don’t mind saying so. As it is true that ground and gold will always be worth something but, when somebody wants to give me their house for my potato, times will have changed for good. I own and/or invest in “all of the above”. I call that “hedging your bets at its’ best”. Now, let the comments fly so I can adjust accordingly. Thanks.

Wayne,

Good thread. I see nothing wrong with spreading yourself out.

FACT: Firearms are in demand right now, and most likely will continue to be in demand in the short term.

Taxes and restrictions may go up over the next 4 years on firearms & ammo. Why not buy at the bottom? Just like RE.

I still love my “ground & gold” though (plus a little silver).

But just wait until the January sales! - n/t - Posted by James-Ct

I have a good friend that is a gun nut. He watches proposed legislation & uses that information to invest in guns & ammo. I don’t pay a lot of attention to details but do know that he averages a 35% return on his gun/ammo investments.

Traveled/trained around with a subject-to Pre-foreclosure buyer.

He used to put up no trespassing signs everytime he got a deed.

I help him design one that said ::::

No Trespassing… We reserve the right to protect our property up to and including DEADLY force Smile you ’ re on Camera.

then We would go through the neighborhood and let the neighbors know of our no trespassing signs and also pass out literature about an upcoming Gun show coming to the area.

We left our numbers and told them to call us if they saw anyone snooping around.

Of course once rehab was done a much softer approach was taken but it definitely was a less theft environment to rehab in.

Hand gun Mags on the dash make a statement as well.

But none of this is needed in Pretty neighborhoods

Who would seriously invest in ADT? - Posted by Wayne-NC

Posted by Wayne-NC on November 13, 2008 at 07:06:28:

I knew that would attract attention. The phrase “invest in” can be loosely defined. If widgets are owned even for a hobby and the government says no more widgets, the value then goes up. Could you call that an investment at that point? Staying ahead of any curve is smart investing. I was trying to make that point. If you are alluding to anything illegal, immoral or fattening, fa get 'bout it! Ain’t gonna happen. As in real estate, autos or anything of a serious nature it has to pass legally with a proper paper trail like a title. Besides, people “invest” in ADT for home protection but there is one problem. For example, “Somebody is breaking into my home”! ADT, “I’ll call for help right away”! Fine, but when help ACTUALLY arrives is the problem. It all sounds good but nobody thinks of that. Remember, when seconds count, police are only minutes away! I don’t want to get too far of off REI here but more info can be obtained on other topic specific forums. If you have further interest, PM me for those.

Man I’m gonna get me some of 'dem signs too! What a great idea.

The whole, “You can get further with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.” thing.

I disagree that it is not(key word) needed in “Pretty neighborhoods”. I would be more inclined to say a lot less likely. However, I do like those ideas even thought they seem rather drastic. As you know I don’t believe in ADT or AAA for any serious protection. Instead I put NRA on the windows of both my vehicles and residence. Those three letters speak volumes. I don’t believe in using “protected by Smith&Wesson” either as it is too threatning. That is crossing the line of a No-No. Also, the one time cost of a good home safe is worth more than paying ever increasing dwelling insurance rates on such items as jewelery and firearms which a normal policy will not cover. Most don’t know that either, but it is catching on. That’s why I mentioned them as an “investment”. Sales of such are increasing. So, what did you mean by gun Mags on the dash? Clips or magazines of the paper kind? Clarification please.

You definitely voted for McCain.

Our President elect has made it clear that he would be happy if the people were stripped of all means to defend themselves and their property where firearms are concerned.

ar15 or ak47 does not matter if in a concerned neighborhood at all the message will fly especially with the young-ins who know what they are. I actually own neither gun but the clips are an effective deterrent on a dashboard and fairly cheap at the gun show and it does not matter if it is dented or beat up. The message will be known…

A less tension point procedure is to hire off duty cops as rehab guys for the tear out portion or more and have then show up in cruisers to do debris removal it was almost twice the cost of the boys hanging around outside of Home depot that I could not talk to but it cleared out 2 of the troubled houses on the block and people quit walking down the street all hours of the day for about a 2-3 months especially when they see the POPO carrying in old video stuff into the house which is usually down in obnoxious fashion on a Saturday mid day when all the kids are curious.

Got most of these ideas after one guy “to be un-named” that bought an apartment in a little harder area and arranged for a door to door Hook and book of ID checks for all the residents… cleared the place out, lowered crime, and many residents in the area with kids in the area wanted to move in.

Knock on wood — in one neighborhood we have not had vandalism or theft in over 1 year on any of our properties.

And being “too threatening” is a matter of opinion. We do not carry assault rifles but never travel un- protected.

I work in inner city community redevelopment areas many times and having a Glock or Sig puts you a bit more on equal footing. Being willing to use it makes you almost equal.

As for my friend the shoe seller, NIKE,…

Me as your loving Walter Mitty says Gun range silhouettes are much better than ADT in the window in a higher than normal crime area! Not that I would be that threatening but they do look nice when back lit at night with the lights accidentally left on. and “little lights of hope” shine through the sillouettes… and the cops that show up to talk to you the next day (because some neighbors will always complain) tend to ask to see you concealed license piece and then when you offer to educate them on RE investing and off hour odd jobs friends can be made and it is amazing when a team of POPO does the DEMO and all the neighbors see them week after week Cruising by to check on the progress and what you are doing next and WHY!

Of course it does make it harder to flirt with the girls that used to walk by the rehab project as they seem not to come around as much on Fridays(paydays for the crews) but some still do.

All we did on Nov 4th is weaken a nation! We will eventually loose the right to defend the ground we live and invest on ala England and Australia. What will it all be worth then? REI will then become extinct. Hopefully not in my lifetime. I’ll keep the real serious opinions to myself at this point. Hmmm, is right!

Deter or encourage? - Posted by Drew

Interesting, the whole silhouette/sign thing. In a high crime area, aren’t you advertising the fact that there are guns avaiable inside to steal when you are not home?

Do you deter crime or make yourself more a target by advertising this?
