You are describing the MLS system. Do you have a friend who is a realtor? You may try some of the online databases but their accuracy is hit or miss.

Is it possible to access a list of homes in your area that have sold in the past several years?
I have the tax rolls, but the value of recent sales is not listed.
Nice to be able to import into a database, and use it for quick property value searches.
