This is difficult to say without reading your purchase contract and reviewing the HUD-1. Generally, taxes are the responsibility of the seller through the closing date, unless otherwise stipulated in the purchase contract. However, depending on when the taxes are due, your HUD-1 might have reflected a credit to you from the seller for the taxes. Look on page 1 of the HUD-1. If you have a loan on the property and have an escrow account with the lender, the lender will pay the taxes from your escrow account.

Also, your closing agent and lender should be very helpful in answering questions specific about your closing.

I am a first time homebuyer and I closed on the house in
june 2006. I was just sent a 2005 county tax bill from the real estate agent with the seller’s name on it and a note from agent saying it was erroneously sent to seller. “Please pay it.” Should I be paying 2005 property taxes? Is this normal?
