Solution - move back in.
The rule does not require consecutively living there; just cumulatively 2 of the last 5.

I have lived in my primary residence the first two of the last five years and rented it out for the last three. I have now placed it for sale but it sure looks like it will not sell in the next six weeks which is the time I have remaining for the primary residence exemption. Anyone have any suggestions on how to save the exemption.
