This is the kind of thinking that is destroying this country. You want to take away someone else’ property rights, because your mother has mental issues…shame on you. Put your mother in a mental hospital and don’t put her problems off on everyone else.

Hi,

I live in Alhambra, CA, and there’s a hearing on Jan 3rd about my neighbor’s application for a permit to construct an addition over the garage and onto their house.

I would like to oppose it because my mother, a paraplegic & paranoid schizophrenic old lady, will become REALLY disturbed by this project. Just a couple of months ago, they put in a new fence between our houses, and my mother became upset & depressed because they killed a bunch of her beloved plants and also inched onto our property with the fence. I know that another, larger construction project would totally debilitate her… She’ll become depressed, which will worsen her already frail physical health, and she’ll feel helpless and attacked.

I don’t know what kinds of arguments I could make since they ARE building on their own property, but I really need some help because my mother’s life is at stake.

Thank you,
CJ

Why don’t you put up a shield of some sort between you and the neighbor’s construction? Suggest to your mother that you and she move her plants to another area of the yard so that the construction does not harm her plants. If you plan to do it together, she might enjoy the project and it could possibly take her mind off the construction. Maybe you could get your mother involved in some activities that take her away from the home during the construction period, such as ceramics, etc.

Not trying to be insensitive, but, the neighbors should not have to be concerned with your mother’s personal problem when trying to improve their property. Improving their property should help to sustain or increase the value of your property.

I agree with Bill. Find some way to work with the neighbor to minimize your mother’s effects. Unless the project will not fit the neighborhood, this should not impede your neighbor’s right to improve his property. Put yourself in his shoes. It is very unfortunate that she suffers from this condition, but it shouldn’t affect everyone else as well. I’m not trying to be insensitive here, just objective.

Sould like this maybe a variance or something needing special approval?

If so there are prob. additional points like it will look out of place in the neighborhood, the size would impact your mother quiet enjoyment of her property, etc.

I would ask to meet with the board privately and discuss the matter. Explain your concerns and fears and simply ask that they put up some sort of shield, tarps, etc., between you and the project and that you will pay for the construction and removal of the shield.

Good Luck,
