Shawn,

Signs are illegal in NY. But, don’t let that stop you! I am part owner of a grassroots based marketing company (street team) that has implemented campaigns all over the east cost.

In an attempt to reconsider the bandit sign issue I am wondering about any experiences with paying homeowners to use their property to post the signs. Littering vacant property or using public property just doesn’t cut it with me. Has anyone had luck asking for permission and paying for use on private property? The areas I’m working will probably have plenty of people willing to take a few bucks but I’m wondering if the signs will stay up…

Sincerely, Kristine

Why are you wringing your hands over such a small issue?

If your “illegal” sign saves just one family from having to face foreclosure, isn’t that reason enough to justify thumbing your nose at a stupid sign ordinance?

I sell a lot of my homes using “illegal” directional signs. My feeling on it is this:

"Everybody hates directional signs.

Until their home is for sale."

And Jim only mentions of it briefly, but if you were to do this, you need properties that actually have traffic going by.

The 6th house down the block on a street with no traffic won’t be of much use. You would need properties with frontage of major arterials where people will drive by and see the sign(s).

Kristine,
You might want to check local ordinances on placing a sign in a residential yard.
Since you want to follow the ordinances to the letter, make sure you find out if this practice is prohibited as well. You might even want to find out who gets the fine, or what ever is issued, for the signs in yards, is it you or the homeowner.
I know in all the areas I’ve ever lived, you could not place a sign in your yard unless it was for a garage sale, temporarily up for the sale time only, or a for sale, for rent type of sign.
I used to place one in the front yard of my personal residence in Illinois a few houses back, because I sat just off of a main highway, on a frontage road.
I got calls on that sign, some of which were the city telling me to take it down.

So, be careful, you don’t want to chance getting the homeowners in trouble.

Good luck,
Jim FL

Political Campaign season really brings the bandit sign issue into light for me. After seeing illegally placed campaign signs for my governor, congresspersons, various mayors, various county offices including chairperson, I really got over the whole bandit sign issue. Gee whiz if the mayor of the city can put up hundreds of bandit signs, then what’s the big deal if I put up a dozen or so every week.

Hi,

I think it all depends on your area. I live in GA and some counties prohibit bandit signs. I try to be very selective and not post like a mad man. I also post in my farm areas only. Good luck!

Kristine,

I have been putting up my signs on the public property, but Im VERY tactful in how I do it. I have sighs entering and leaving my targeted neighborhoods, but NEver EVER Do I go and put them down the streets where the houses are. MANY in my area do, and are very tacky about it. Actually putting them IN Peoples Yards. Or putting up not ONE sign, but FIVE In a row in one block. I Think this is what gives us a bad rap.
I go Really ticked last night, and I know I shouldnt have, but there are two others in my neighborhood that put up signs, and I have been considerate of them, I think, in how I put mine up. Last night I just grrrrrr one have put their sign not BY mine… but RIGHT over it. And that just made me mad LOL I Pay for mine just like they do, but I wont stoop to that. There is a whole world to put mine in I dont need to cover theirs.
I dont think putting them up on public property is such a bad thing, as long as you do it tactfully and consideratly. Not really any different than House for sale signs, and Garage sale signs… IMHO But I am SURE There would be plenty of homeowners that WOULD Gladly take a few bucks to let you put signs up on their property.

Rob, have you noticed a better day to put them out that have the best chance of staying up the longest. I’ve found that the signs on major corners stay up only a day or two but the should get the best exposure.

I don’t know how it is where you are, but here in Cobb County, GA there is a provision in the county ordinances for political signs as well as garage sale signs, etc that makes it lawful for those signs to be placed.

Very good question. I dont see any big deal in it…
But you have to love the selective targeting of those jackarses who come in behind you and uproot, paint for cut your signs into strips and yet leave the politician’s signs alone. You would think they have jobs or something more important in life to do.

Who do you contact if you want to find out if bandit signs are legal in your area? I live in the Bronx.

I think it’s best just to learn from experience. Some municipalities work weekends taking down signs. Some hire private companies to take them down. I’ve learned from years of experience where I can and can’t put them in my town. Some places the sign won’t last a day and some places the sign will still be up 3 weeks later.

I don’t think it’s legal here since I saw about 3 news stories on TV discussing these “illegally” placed signs. One candidate got caught taking down another candidate’s sign. The candidate whose sign was stolen said on TV that although the signs are technically illegal only the code enforcement board or the property owner has the right to take the signs down. Another candidate said, I just distribute the signs to supporters but I can’t control where they get posted. It almost sounded like a creonline discussion.
