Kilz vs Bullseye 1-2-3- primer - Posted by Dave (WI)
Posted by Dave (WI) on May 17, 2010 at 19:39:10:
I’ve always used oil based Kilz when I paint ceilings that are yellow from cigarette smoke. I was looking at some water based alternatives this weekend and Bullseye 1-2-3 primer seems like it might work. I’ts about the same price as Kilz, the only advantages would be less smell and easier clean up. Has anyone used this product?
Thanks,
Dave

I think Zinsser (maker of 123 and BIN) recommends BIN rather than 123 for smoke. See zinsser.com. 123 is my go to primer. For anything it won’t work on (which isn’t much), I use BIN, which sticks to anything. It is shellac based and smells sweet. Cleans up well with household ammonia.

Dave,
I concur with both Shawn and Darrel with one caveat. If it is more on the brown side of tan from cigarette smoke, only the Kilz original will work.

Since Menards is the store nearest my projects and they do not carry Kilz—I have used the Bullseye product. If I remember correctly (questionable at my age) there are two grades of the Bullseye primer. I try to use the more expensive and have found it to be “GEFT”----good enough for trailers. I just finished a job today—it’s not white but it is bright enough to keep people from looking up and noticing.
Just noticed the “other” mobile home forum is off the air----know anything?

Dave, while I have not used Bullseye brand paint, I have used Kilz latex based primer and with what I have experienced - stick with the oil based kilz primer. Just after painting all appeared well, then the stains reappeared throughout the month after painting.
