How do you become a "people person"? - Posted by NJ989

You’re preachin to this choir! I could easily sell someone on my software idea, because that is what I knew and believed in, but REI seems so different.

I think another difference is that I never had to ‘hustle the streets’ to make a living. Some things just came easy to me (middle class upbringing, college education and job), but it seems that some people that I have met, that had less fortunate upbringings, are better salespeople naturally. I guess my big degree doesn’t matter so much now.

Todd, I think you misread my post. My reference to “not applying to real estate situations” was in a separate paragraph, related specifically to conversational hypnosis. I agree and think that most NLP techniques are highly applicable in real estate situations. I don’t think the same goes for conversational hypnosis, however. I admittedly have a bias against it, since I think the whole idea of it is a bit silly, but the reason I don’t think it applies well in RE situations is because you are usually talking to more than one person (i.e., husband and wife). Maybe if you are a skilled practitioner you can catch them both with it, but people are rarely that much on the same wavelength at the same time. My understanding of Ericksonian hypnosis is that it very much IS intended to induce a trance. No, not like the “you are getting very sleeeeepy” kind that most people think, but one were they are in a daze, induced by the pace of your speech, and thus their subconscious is very open to the suggestion of whatever you are saying. Most of us have had this experience at one time or another in our lives, as either the inducee or the inducer as it were, but not known how it happened, or what it was called. But it just seems that, for the casual practitioner (which most of us here would be) that it’s better suited to one on one situations.
