HELP ME GET RID OF THIS CAR… - Posted by Erin (Detroit)

I have bought a house (bank owned) where the lady has died and nobody has claimed her car (4 flats, kinda junky, don’t even know if it runs). I do not want it and do not have a title for it. Short of towing it into and down the street hoping the city will tow it (Detroit has lots still waiting), how can I get rid of it? I have talked to the police and I have been told that I have to acquire an abandoned title by the city police (the suburb of Detroit I am actually working in has gone bankrupt and the county sheriff is patrolling it - whom have more important things to do than file for an abandoned title). Any way to get rid of this “thing” as I want to rent the house section 8?

I once donated an old car to the local volunteer fire department. They set fire to it and used it as a training tool to train new recruits on how to fight vehicle fires. Also, they could use it to train for “extractions” where they may need to use the “jaws of life” to remove an accident victim.

Feel free to email me privately about Detroit if you’d like. (I’m Downriver)

Call a junk yard - Posted by Nate(DC)

They might even tow it for free. The big problem is going to be the lack of a title. You might have to find a “shady” junkyard to do it for you. Or can you just get some neighborhood kids to take it?

It’s Tax Deduction Time of Year!! - Posted by gwtx

Erin,

Call several of the charitable organizations where you live. United Way, Red Cross, Volunteers of America, etc.

They take old vehicles that don’t even run. Some of them don’t even require a title. They arrange for the tow truck. They auction it off for some money to help run their business. You get the receipt to claim on your taxes. Win-Win

So if you do need to get an abandoned vehicle title, it is well worth it on your taxes. Check it out.

have had the same situation a few years ago. a tenant left their old car in the garage when he moved out.

call a bonded towing company. they will tow it, do all the legal stuff for them to get title and then auction it off. all at no cost to you.

In my area there are tow services advertising to pick up abandoned cars. Check your yellow pages. If that fails check with apartment managers or mobile home park managers and see who they get to remove them. They must have the same problem occasionally.

Or park it on 8 Mile. I’m sorry I don’t have any real advice, but that is what I would do with it.
