I’m recently admitted attorney who felt the same as you when I graduated college. Let me just say that a law degree and admission to the bar gets you an extra status that is invaluable. I went into a partnership with my brother-in-law, a real estate agent, and we own a very successful real estate brokerage with about 40 agents. I serve as broker and in house counsel, and despite my youth, my law degree allows me to be taken seriously by people much older than myself. You will still have time to start investing while in school. As for the debt, I’m about 75k in the hole and make payments of about $350.00 a month. Not much given the benefits I’ve received from the degree,
So, I recently graduated from Harvard, and I’m deciding what to do with my life. I was planning on going to law school in a year, but I’m becoming less interested in law and more interested in business – real estate investing and development, in particular. My question is, would it still be worthwhile to obtain a law degree if I were going into real estate? I imagine it might give me an edge in contracts and tax structuring. The real issue is whether this would be worth the $150k debt and three years’ opportunity cost. Is it likely to benefit me that much? Thanks for any information.
