general contractor's percentage? - Posted by Mel (NC)

20%-30% is typically in my area (Austin, TX) - couple of years ago 30% was normal, but construction prices are currently way down, 17%-20% is more typical now. I’m currently building some duplex’s, I’m paying ~14%. A chunk of that goes on insurance (builders risk is cheap, I forget the other policy/warranty they carry) - probably 3-4%, leaving them with ~16% for their time.

Other area’s may be different…

I know this would certainly vary by location, but what is a ball park figure for the percentage a general contractor would make on a single family residence? I’ve been rehabbing for several years and just mulling over the idea of building new construction.

Thanks,
