I have used the $1.59/FT laminate that was not the pergo brand, but similar. It was very durable, and the grooves went together nicely, alot thicker than the .99c laminate. No accidental breaking that stuff.
As for the .99 laminate that just came from Japan, time will tell, so far the grooves are harder to get together, 1 or 2 in each box is defective, and it is easy to break the grooves. However, dad is figuring out how to work the cheaper stuff, and the end result is looking great.

A big shipment of the 0.99 cent/FT of laminate just got here this past sat, is avail at Big Bobs in Everett, probably in all of the other area flooring stores.
It goes really fast–I missed out on the last mobile I had, didnt get there in time and I had to buy the 1.59 laminate.
I’m doing most of a DW in the maple and it looks great.
I have nothing to do with the store, but thought i’d pass on the info—

I’d get a pallet or two, if I were you. And if you have someplace to store it. I have a local place where I get .99, but I’m trying to do better. The kick is getting a reasonable installer. The few guys I’ve checked with want $2 per sf!! That’s unbelievable!
