LMAO, if it’s any consolation (I know it’s not) you’re not alone! I ditto your experience.

What does it typically cost to fixed burst pipes? Its from the cold winter in PA. I found an ad that they are giving away the trailer but it has burst pipes. What kind of work am I looking at here?

If the pipes burst then you may have to replace some of the subfloor as well. I’m finishing up one that we replumbed from above since we needed to replace the subfloor anyway. We used 1/2" CPVC and were able to do the whole house for under $150. You can cut the stuff with a hacksaw and it’ll handle hot water to 180. I don’t know if it’ll work in your area but it was easy to work with and I could use the tools I have.

It cost me about $250 to pex a home, it will run a little higher in your area due to heat tapes ect. The Pex crimpers are about a $100 and money WELL spent!

The biggest thing I can recommend if you decide to tackle this is to use pex and find a plumbing store that sells the parts at a reasonable price. Do not buy enough pex fittings to repair an entire home at lowes, the cost adds up very quickly.

maybe you will get some better numbers but $900 to $1500 would be a range that would include new heat tape, faucets, pipes, install, belly wrap repair etc in my area.

I would also never use CPVC or PVC supply lines in anything. It will not take any kind of freeze or stress at all. I see that the “Yankee” pex tool (the one that uses vice grips) is stocked in HD now. It does 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 all for under $30 I have one and still use it from time to time in tight spots. A word about the “crimp” style rings also. The tool that I have seen in Lowes will not work on the wide “Qwest pex” crimp rings hanging right above it on the rack and it says so right on the box. They stock a thinner “cheap looking” ring that works with the tool they stock.

Folks DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT use CPVC for anything other than short-term repairs to CPVC pipes that are already there. CPVC works just fine so long as the power never goes out in the winter and the home never goes vacant. The first time it freezes (with or without water) the pipe becomes brittle. I’ve had more problems from CPVC than any other type of plumbing INCLUDING Quest, which is now banned.

I guess I should have posted that that is the price I am paying to have someone else go down, and he is fixing the insulation that fell out where he had to cut into the underbelly. this is one time I had no interest in doing it myself, the pipes had shattered, some of the pieces he pulled out had broken in spirals 4 ft long on the pipe.

I fortunately have not had your experiences with CPVC and have found that they ended up holding up better than the tubing that was already installed.

I have noticed that when repairing leaks due to freezing that CPVC will seperate at the unions before bursting, and later discovered that it is a design feature to prevent pipes from splitting and make repair easier.

I have not had the chance to work with PEX but, maybe in the next one I’ll give it a shot just to compare. How long does it take to replumb a house with PEX?

If I were in Congress, I would make CPVC a federal crime. That’s how strongly I feel about this junk.

Its thin, inferior and unlike what you have been told, I have never seen it separate where it freezes.

It has always, 100% of the time, split in a spiral that goes the length of the pipe from one fitting to the next. Sounds good right? Just replace that fitting. Nope.

You replace that pipe and fittings, turn water back on and then begin the process all over again. In a few days you may have found all the breaks and entirely replace the plumbing with, YUP… you got it… the junk CPVC. Don’t ask me how I know this. I am ashamed to even say that I did just this. After that I learned. Only have to hit me real hard for me to learn.

Upon feezing CPVC piping will crack exactly as described by Tony, every time. Pex piping will take a freeze up and usually suffers no piping/fitting damage, and when damage does occur it will be in one area, not wall to wall.
I have bought/sold over 1500 used mobile homes and have never seen the fitting seperate from piping upon freeze up, the only time I can recall seeing anything similar to what you have described was when water was turned on before glue had completely dried.
