I’m Australian and living in Australia. Is there an idiot’s guide to getting legal standing and finance in the US for real estate investing. I’m a practised investor over here, but things are different on your side of the pond:-)

Bob,
I invest in the US, the UK and Spain. I have also looked at Bali (I had a deal in play there until the bombing) and more recently Prague.
I started in the US and have invested there for over 20 years.
I suggest you do a couple of things. Consider a book or two from the Amazon (or similar). Something by Bronchick is good.
When I started with the UK (2nd country after the US) it was funny how I would run into things that were very similar and other things that were completely different. Hence the learning curve is odd in that you can never quite tell where you are on it.
Are you going to try to invest at a distance or are you going to move to the US for a period?
Ignoring the legal differences another item to deal wit is credit scoring in the US. You will not have a score so will be constrained for a while. Either you will get more creative or you will have to use more cash per deal.
I know this is brief. The topic is too broad for a simple answer other then read some books. If you post follow up questions we can dig deeper.
