You might be able to get away with it forever. You also might get caught the day after you buy. If you do something like this, pray that there is never a fire. If there is a loss of life you could be in deep sheet.

there are hardly any duplexes in my area. but there is a single family home that has been split to have someone renting the top and someone else the bottom. but it isn’t legally a duplex. if i bought this place and kept renting it out like a duplex, what could happen to me legally if someone found out it wasn’t a duplex?

Twas a place that the owner built another house in the back to rent out. Mo permits, no nothing. He got caught before he could rent it but after building it by the city codes. That place has sat empty now for 30 years. His only option is to tear it down, with a demolition permit of course.

I got a letter from the city once that started like this:

“Dear Owner of illegal tri-plex . . .”

It went downhill from there.
