Converting from Oil to gas heating system - Posted by Phong

In DC I would be looking at something like the following (I am assuming the duct work and/or radiators, which ever it is, will remain in place and you are ONLY replacing the furnace and fuel supply):

Remove, drain, and haul away old oil tank $300-$500
Demolish, abate, and remove old oil burner $500
Install new gas furnace $2500 ±

All together - maybe $3500 should get the job done, if you’re getting the right (cheap) people to do it. If you are paying “retail prices” maybe $5K…

Does the existing oil furnace need replacing? If not, and it’s in good shape, you might consider not converting. Dollar for dollar, an efficient oil furnace is about the same cost as an efficient gas one. The main advantage to gas is aesthetic and perceptual.

How expensive is it to convert a house that’s currently using an oil system to a gas system assuming that gas pipelines are available to tap into?

I had a licensed and qualified plumber do it on a single family home for $3k, which included parts and labor.

But I imagine a lot depends on your neck of the woods. Where are you located?
