Call 3 or 4 independent agents (because they aren’t tied to one company), explain what you need, and get a quote from all. Just make sure they are all quoting the same amount of coverage.

i am purchasing a four-family. i will be living in one of the units, and renting out the other three.
1). what kind of homeowners insurance do i need?
2). is there anything i need to know before I start shopping for homeowners insurance?
3). How much do i expect to pay?

The was I set this up on a duplex was to have a policy for the structure, and then basically renters insurance for the unit in which I lived.
Some companies quoted this as 2 policies, others as 1.
It’s quite pricey, esp. if the building is older and doesn’t have fire walls, copper plumb, new roof, etc.
