Buying Quickbooks used… - Posted by dave

Hi,

I’ve been wanting to purchase Quickbooks so I can start tracking things along with John Hyres KISS program. After looking around a bit I’ve noticed that used versions can be bought for a 1/3 of the cost of buying new. Is there going to be any issues with using used software? I’ve read in some places that there will be no issues and others say that Quickbooks can only be installed once. Meaning, a used copy is useless.

If anybody has some insight, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks

I have read quite a few bad reviews about the bugs in Quickbooks 2009 (mainly with the online banking), so I will be purchasing the 2008 version.

I have John Hyre’s KISS guide, but am not using it.

I currently use Mike Butler’s 5MWAP and it came with a free Quickbooks 2007.

I hate that answer but its true. I have the 2006 version which was licensed for 3 machines. After the 3rd machine it would no longer activate, so I called them. I told them I had replaced one of the 3 machines and now needed it to activate there. Now that all 3 original machines have been replaced, its clear they merely lifted the restriction on their database.

I also have the 2009 version, but it will only install on one machine.

They actually install, but the newer versions require activation at Intuit’s site before they work at all. The 2006 version will work but none of the bug fixes will download.

Rich,

I’m looking at a used copy of QB Pro 2005 right now($60) which still has the product/activation key/code, manual, box, etc. to go along with it. The seller claims that they have installed this both at their work office and home computer and sees no reason that I should have any trouble loading it on my computer. I’m just not sure I’m willing to take his word at this point.

As like your answer, I’ve read many conflicting points of view on this matter. Would you suggest that if I do go through and buy a used copy which will not install, to just go ahead and call Customer Support and give them a line similar to the one you used?

As an aside, does Hyres template disc load with versions of QB newer than 2005? In my copy he mentions it being compatable with only 03-05.

Thanks

I recently bought 2009 (new) for only $100. It’s been on sale at most Office Supply stores. Check their weekly fliers and internet sites.

Personally, I would not buy unless they stated it had never been activated. I usually look at buycheapsoftware.com and can find good prices there on stuff I know has not been activated.

You should be able to install/use it as is. Activation is recorded on Intuit’s site and you won’t know if the activation works until you try and activate it.

Look around. Someone on another listserv posted that, I think it was Amazon, had a coupon to order it for $70–there are deals out there.
