Builder sold property to registered pedophile - Posted by Mark

I hadn’t thought of it that way, kid, but it might be a risky way of making a living to keep moving & upsetting the neighbors! Honestly, I’d rather give a guy a bit of profit to move than to expose any children in my neighborhood to the risk of his occupancy. I do understand that my suggestion would only put those in the new neighborhood @ risk, & I regret that neither I nor the rest of society has come up w/a good solution for dealing w/pedophiles. Unless we protect the current generation of children from predators, the next generation is sure to also be @ risk. Our society is home-growing its own worst nightmares, & it is indeed sad. I was in a store a coupla years ago w/DGGDs, when the not-yet-two yearold grabbed my prescription pill box out of my purse & took off @ full-speed down the aisle. Because I feared she was going to ingest pills (been through that before w/a previous generation) I had no choice but to being a full-scale pursuit as she ducked around the corner & under a rack of clothes, leaving the 3 year old alone in my cart. Fortunately another shopper saw what was happening & stood guard over the child I had abandoned. When I returned, dragging a kicking toddler (known as among family “Hurricane Annie”) the woman told me what my elder DGGD had told her when she approached her. “Please don’t steal me,” had been her plea to the woman. Oh, my heart broke that I had not only put this child @ risk but that this dear sweet tot lived in a world where she necessarily had been taught to so fear others.

I don’t know the answer, Michaela, but I do know that if the day ever comes where the world puts thee & me in charge, we’ll make a solution our #1 priority–

We live in a 4 year old development project. Our neighbor was trying to sell her house, got a good offer, but was shocked when she learned that the next door neighbor is a registered pedophile and she has to disclose this information to the buyer.

As a result, the offer was retracted. Plus, the real estate agent told her that he will not be able to help her sell this house anymore.

We bought our house after that unit was sold to the registered pedophile. Shouldn?t the builder disclose this information to us? Or for that matter disclose it to all neighbors?

This is seriously affecting house prices in the neighborhood. Is there anything that can be done?

Thank you.

How do you know it’s a pedophile? Normally they’re registerd as ‘Sex offender’, which could also mean an 18 year old, that got caught having sex with his 16-year old girlfriend. There are several degrees for sex offenders. Do you know which he is. If he’s a pedophile - yes, you definitely need to be alarmed. But if this is just someone, that slept with a 16 year old, then I don’t think that’s a big deal.

What State are you in? It is hard for me to believe that there is a State law requiring you to disclose adverse information about neighbors.

Protect your children & investments by forming a neighborhood consortium to buy the guy out, paying a premium if necessary. It is not an ideal solution because you’d be inflicting him on another neighborhood, but your children w/be safer. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this predatory behavior.

I do not know which state you live in or what the restrictions are, however, anyone can go online and check their area to see if any pedophiles live around them or even in places they are considering purchasing. Just do a search on pedophiles and you will get lots of information on how to determine if one lives nearby. There is probably a website that outlines what your state’s requirements are as far as disclosure.

Tye,

This sounds terrible, but a pedophile could make a killing that way. Buy one of the first houses in a subdivision, get bought out at an inflated price and
do the same in another neighborhood.

I know of a cure, and it is not pretty.

California has a lot of disclosure requirements, listed in the link above, but disclosure of a neighbors criminal is not one of them. Your agent was either a light weight, or just did not want to list the property. This is not to say that having a neighbor that is a convicted pedophile would not be a problem with some sales, as the buyer might find out about the issue when doing their own research.
