Can anyone tell me what a boutique hotel is and just what is unique about calling it “boutique”? Karl

Boutique hotels are generally small, and never part of a major brand. They also tend to be upscale hotels (not Ma and Pa operations.)

As a result they are generally found in big cities or in established upscale resorts. Some of them have gotten together to form marketing groups which allow them to advertise nationally/globally, and some have mini-chains to get the same economy of scale for marketing and back-office, although each property is very different in character (unlike a Hilton, Best Western, 4 Seasons, or whatever.)

You can see some examples of boutique hotels at

Rob, thanks for the excellent explanation. The reason I asked the question is that I responded to an ad for a 32 room boutique hotel in my area and when the seller became aware I didn’t know what one was, he virtually hung up on me. I’ll know better next time. Karl
