Best way to spend a summer? - Posted by John

I would apply for some sort of real estate job. Weather in a real estate office, mortgage broker, property management, etc…

You might also consider finding a real estate agent who is looking for summer help. Some of the “top producers” need an extra hand during the summer doing odds and ends. Such things as putting up signs, organizing paper work, filing paper work, you name it. Kind of like a personal assistant.

Best of luck. Stick with it. In the long run you will learn and succeed.

I’m a college student who would like to learn more about real estate investing and development, and would like some input on what would be the best use this upcoming summer to prepare myself for a career in REI. I suspect most will advise me to just get out and stat doing deals, but this isn’t really an option as I have no money, credit, or much RE knowledge at all. Also, my parents are on my back to have something “official” lined up for this summer (read: resume material), and coming home and announcing my plans to become a private investor won’t really fly with them. Should I just pick up a job in a real estate agent’s office, or look for an internship with a major development or construction company, or what? BTW, I’m in the Phoenix area, so if anyone has any specific ideas, I’d love to hear them. Thanks.

If you can find one that needs help you will learn the basics of carpentry, plumbing, painting, carpet laying, roofing, drywall and be able to pick their brain as well. Excellent way to learn 1st hand and possibly pick up a mentor as well.

Good Luck,

One Idea - Posted by ken in sc

One idea could be to actually locate the investors in Phoenix and see if any of them need help. Check the classifieds in the Real Estate Wanted section and call every ad. Check also in the houses for sale areas and see who is selling “rent to own” or “lease with option”. Check the yellow pages and look for investor ads. Look for Bandit signs, etc. Ask all these people for work for the summer. Work cheap if you have to. For for more than one part time maybe. But at least you will be watching an actual investor, not some agent holding an open house.

Good luck, although with the attitude you appear to have, luck will likely not be needed.
