Historically, “Esquire” is a term of someone just below a Knight. In America, it was used for someone being a Sheriff or Justice of the Peace. In modern times, it is used by Lawyers. It does not designate that someone is licensed to practice.

To all you attorneys out there I have a question on protocol. When is a person allowed to have “Esquire” listed after their name? I was always under the impression they had to be admitted to the bar of at least one state before being able to stick the “Esq” after their name and that just graduating law school wasn’t enough.
