Anyone Else’s Magnetic Signs Getting Stolen - Posted by Vic
Posted by Vic on September 22, 2000 at 01:50:10:
Hello Everyone,
Two weeks ago,I bought 4 magnetic signs for my car. I put 2 on ea. side. Tonight I parked in a parking lot & when I got back to my car 2 of the signs were gone. I was at our local REI meeting of all places too.
Does anyone else have trouble with people stealing their magnetic car signs? Has anyone found a good way to prevent this, other than to take signs off car when parked, which kind of defeats the purpose?
Thanks,
Vic
P.S. At least it was worth it, cuz we got to hear Vena Jones-Cox speak.

Try “Fast Signs” a franchise printing and sign company.
Also you can or atleast you could buy magnetic signs that had the printing right on them. This way the theif would have a sign but no way to alter it. I know that these signs are possible because I had some on a company vehicle at one time but it seems that recently these sign makers have gone to the vinyl lettering because I have some signs for open houses of that type.
The Fast sign company can also make you white vinyl signs that go on your windows. These are very popular out west and theft proof(unless they steal your vehicle).
Good luck
My bet of course was that it was one of your competitors looking to reduce your work load and get some free signage.

…for those sticky signs you put inside your car windows. The people who make my business cards told me they can make them for me.

Vic,
I bought a set of these last year for my car.
Today I have one left.
At first I thought that someone had stolen the one sign.
I wondered why they only took one, and assumed that as they were taking my sign, someone walked up on them and they were unable to get them both.
I was not furious, but a little angry over losing the one sign.
Then recently while driving, my last sign flew off the car.
Thankfully I noticed it as it left the car door and sailed into the ditch along side the road.
I know that when I bought the signs, the sign maker told me to make sure that the sign had all the edges attached to the car.
If one little corner is loose, the whole sign could fly off.
So, perhaps your sign flew off and you did not see it.
Are you SURE it was there when you arrived at your club meeting?
To this day, I don’t know if my sign flew off or was stolen.
Not a big deal though, they were only $50 for the set anyway.
And, who knows, if it was stolen, maybe the culprit put the sign somewhere where people will see it.
If you do find out where the clear inside window sticker signs can be purchased at a reasonable price, please pass it along.
Take care,
Jim IL

A shady real estate investor probably ganked your signs at the meeting.

I haven’t had any trouble with my magnetic signs, but then again, I haven’t had them for very long. To avoid having your automobile advertising stolen, Vena Jones-Cox recommends using the signs that cling to the INSIDE of the car windows. Except for the printing, they are translucent. She says that they are held in place by static electricity and can be easily removed.

Vic,
Don’t have the signs on my car yet so I haven’t had any of those stolen yet.
I have had a problem with my yard signs though.
I bought those nice posts and yinyl coated aluminum signs like some of the realtors use to put out in front of houses that I have for sale. At the last house I had on the market, I had 2 stolen from it in a week. After the last one went, I didn’t put anymore out there. Those suckers are 30 bucks apiece! LOL

Jim,
Hey! I thought you might be responding.
I know what you’re saying about the signs blowing off. The sign guy told me the same thing. My signs were on there as good as can be. The whole sign was on metal & all the edges were attached to metal. The surface was flat too, so I think they were attached pretty good.
I’ve been thinking about it though & I think I know what happened. When I pulled into the parking lot, there was a guy getting out of his car. As soon as I pulled in his eyes were fixated on my signs. Then as I was getting out the car, he said something like “so you buy houses huh” & we had a little conversation. This guy was definitely not int’d in selling or buying though, cuz he even said he was “too young”
We meet in a hotel & he was there for a seperate meeting. I saw him staring intently at the signs though as I was pulling in (much longer than to just read them). My thinking is that he really liked these signs & since he’s a DJ for the other group that meets there, I’m leaning towards him being the thief right now.
I’m speculating a bit here, but if I had to bet on someone I’d bet on him. Where I parked was in a business area & there weren’t many cars around as it was after hours. There’s no houses around there either, so that’s why I’m really thinking it was him.
Not many people around - parked in big biz parking lot - & his eyes fixated on the sign.
I decided I’m gonna monitor that parking lot & see if 2 yellow signs show up on his car (I kind of remember what it looks like). I’m going to make this a little project of mine cuz I want to see if those signs show up. They meet twice a wk & it’s only a couple mins. from my house, so I’m gonna pass by & see. For curiosity if no other reason.
Like you said though, the signs are cheap enough, so I won’t put too much time into it.
Oh the guy at the sign place told me that people can steal those signs & then peel your ph. # off of them & have theirs put on for $5 or so. So it’s possible whoever took wanted the signs & was gonna pull off the lettering & have their own put on.
Anyway I’m getting ready to order some new ones anyway.
If I find a source for those window signs I will let everyone know. Right now I’m thinking an auto dealer could tell you where they get them from. Then just order from there.

Justin,
I was kinda wondering that myself, but why would they only take 2 & leave the other 2? I guess there really isn’t an answer to this. People that do this are stupid to start out with. Then I started thinking that maybe it was kids playing games - take off my car & stick on another. I looked but couldn’t find em on any other cars.

William,
Hi! I had the same problem once. I was putting out more than one sign on a house & was using the metal frames. I put one out once & by the time I got home it was gone. So I started chaining them together where possible. I got smart though. Now I only use wooden stakes that cost maybe $3 a pc. I like these a whole lot better.
