I’m looking at properties in my area and the only potential good deals are ones in really bad condition. How might I go about finding someone trusworthy to estimate the costs and complete the renovation?

You can ask other investors in your local area, not that you want to steal their contractors, but they might tell you the ones to stay away from.
Other than that just start taking quotes and work on building the relationships yourself.
it’s not always easy.

good luck.

Heck!
I’ve even had trouble finding Contractors to follow through on my own residence!
They come out, and most of them promise the moon, but none of it is in writing! They are too sleezy for me to consider.
You ask for their written estimate, and some come in, hand-written and extremely unprofessional. I think to myself, is this the quality of work I’ll get with this guy too?
Then, you get one that you really like, wait for the written bid, and he comes out with another partner for even a second opinion on the job. I think, okay, this bid will be well thought out and I may go with him.
Never heard from him.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wasted my time and energy to go over my house with someone and never got a written bid!
Many don’t even show up to look at the place.
In this hot market, Real Estate prices aren’t the only problem!
Contractors don’t care if they string you along or waste your time! They must think that my remodel isn’t worth their time!
