Address Correction Requested - Posted by No Other Investor

I’ve been told by several clerks and a supervisor that current policy is NOT to provide a forwarding address unless there is a court order or legal process. This is consistent with my experience in that “address correction requested” doesn’t work but I was able to get a forwarding address when I presented a copy of a judgement.

BTW, you could send certified mail, return receipt requested, to the missing person at the old address and the mail will be forwarded. When (and if)the mail is delivered, the postman is supposed to enter the delivery address on the return receipt. Of course, this only works if the person accepts the certified mail.

I don’t know why the old “return receipt requested” technique works in NY, but if you find out, please post.

Address Correction Requested - Posted by No Other Investor

I was told if you put an Address Correction Requested message and DO NOT FORWARD on your envelop, the post office would return the envelop to you with owner’s forwarding address if he has it. Is there something more to this, like you must pay for this service somehow because I live in the state of Maryland and that does not work. I tried it. I mailed a letter to a friend who has a forwarding address at the post office and she recieved the letter. The letter didn’t come back to me nor did the Post Office mail me her forwarding address. What gives?

Ancillary Service Endorsements
Undeliverable-as-addressed (UAA) mail is forwarded, returned to sender, or treated as dead mail depending upon authorization for the particular mail class. An ancillary service endorsement is used to instruct the Postal Service regarding the mailpiece’s appropriate disposition upon determining that it is UAA. On First-Class Mail, the following endorsements may be used as an updating method to meet the move update standard:

Return Service Requested. If UAA, the mailpiece is returned with the new address or reason for nondelivery; no charge.

Address Service Requested.

Months 1 - 12: the mailpiece is forwarded; no charge; a separate notice of the new address is provided; an address correction fee is charged.
Months 13 - 18: the mailpiece is returned with the new address attached; no charge.
After month 18 or if undeliverable: the mailpiece is returned with reason for nondelivery attached; no charge.
Change Service Requested. Separate notice of new address or reason for nondelivery provided; in either case, address-correction fee is charged; mailpiece is not forwarded or returned but disposed of by the Postal Service. This endorsement option is available for First-Class Mail only when used in conjunction with electronic Address Change Service (ACS).

Ancillary service endorsements allow the sender to obtain or request (provided the appropriate endorsement is used) the addressee’s new (forwarding) address if the addressee filed a Change-of-Address Order with the Postal Service or the reason for nondelivery. These endorsements also provide the Postal Service with instructions regarding the disposition of UAA mail. These new endorsements provide a simpler and more consistant system than the previous endorsements.

Try this… - Posted by Barbara?NY

I do a lot of mailings and use this technique, as well. It works for me here on Long Island, NY. I simply stamp “address correction requested” and nothing more.

Since you found this didn’t work on the one occasion I’d suggest going to your local USPS and ask them what they’d recommend. If you don’t like your answer, come back another time and ask another clerk or the manager. Since I do so many mailings I know the staff at two local post offices and they are really GREAT! They are your best resource here.

Good luck and don’t give up.
