a quick class on cabinetry - Posted by joe--ga

Hey John,

Sorry I don’t have any pics. I have sold these particular units some time ago.

To clarify the cabinets I was speaking of in this example was the ones under the sink. Essentially just using the current set as a template for the new and replace it all with sturdy lumber.

If you want to replace the cabinets in a mobile home, remove
the old ones and here is the best way to measure it.it is
VERY simple after you get this trick.
First off you want to put in usually a 36 inch sink base
cabinet over the sink drain hole,.After this measure the
remaining distance you have where you want cabinets.CABINETS
come in 3 inch increments. If you have 65 inches of space to
put in cabinetry,put in the 36 sink base,then maybe a 24
inch base cabinet with 3 drawers in it,then then a 9 inch
cabinet with a long shallow front panel. These cabinets
simply screw together, then locate the studs on the wall
behind the cabinets and screw the bases to the studs in the
wall in several areas.Locate a piece of countertop for the
entire cabinets and you have a set of cabinets.ALWAYS look
at the damages section in the big box stores for small nicks
and scratches on countertop.even if its to long, you can cut
it off,or someone ordered the wrong color or anything you
can get a deal on.lay the counter top on the cabinets and
from below inside the cabinets, screw the countertop to the
cabinets using screws NOT to long to go thru the top of the
countertop.Hope this helps…NOTE-- to install the sink,
DONOT lay the sink on top of the countertop, mark it and cut
the hole.It will fall thru. The sink measurement must be 3/4
to 1 inch inside the sink so the lip of the sink will fit
and bolt down…
I have even relayed the finish on the top of counters. The
big box stores sells sheets of formica.wilsonart sells a
gallon of glue to install. Its rather simple, except you need
to ventilate the room while gluing or you may end up with a
cheap HIGH.Cut the formica with a fine tooth skill saw, glue
and lay on the countertop and put some heavy objects on it
for 24 hours.this is a rather easy fix for banged up, torn
up countertop .If you have cabinets that just look bad, but
overall in good shape, paint them and put on new knobs.

We have found that painted kitchen shelves made out of 1x12 with thin plywood backing can substitute for cabintets nicely. Instead of doors, cheap curtains/valences from a discount decorating store can be used to dress them up and add color/cheer.

We’ve done shelves of gridded 1x12 for the upper cabinets and then made 2x4 frames for the lower cabinets and faced these with 1x4 with OSB shelves covered in luan, leftover vinyl, etc. So far we’ve left the lower shelves open but possibly shower curtain or other cleanable fabric could be used.

There are a few things to keep in mind when buying prefab cabinets. Drawers cost more than doors. If you need to fill a set amount of space one large cabinet is always cheaper than 2 small ones. Finally, if you cant find boxes that fill your space exactly you can always buy a 1 X whatever piece of wood, stain it to match & use it as a spacer between 2 boxes.

In the past I have just had the handyman tear out the old and build a 2x4 frame. Using 3/4" plywood we cut out a front that fits the old doors.

This is very sturdy but not necessarily easy on the eye at this point. Cabinets and counter tops is the next level of landlord friendly improvements I plan to work on in the next year or two. Several of my homes are knocking on the door of this upgrade and I am just about finished with the other landlord upgrades that I like to do. This will allow me to enjoy a new adventure.

Tony, while I (think I do;) understand the proscription here, on-site, re attachments, etc., it sure would be nice if you handy-men/gals would maybe give us a link to some photos of before & after & your projects.

Such links are possible here, n’es pas?
