Medicare will not pay for long term care…it is a federal program that pays for a limited number of days for “skilled care” i.e. rehab only while you are improving.
Medicaid is a federal/state match program that MAY pay for long term care. The feds set broad eligibility rules but each state administers (and financially matches the fed dollars) the program and therefore gets to set their own rules on eligibility. Michigan is one of the VERY FEW states that have an unlimited size, unlimited value absolute homestead exemption for medicaid purposes. (“homestead” means different things and is in fact defined differently for income tax, capital gain tax, property tax, bankruptcy, and medicaid purposes) SEE A qualified ELDERLAW Attorney in your state to properly answer this question NOW not after you go into the nursing home.
