Just paint everything. Smoke from tobacco leaves behind a film. I add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to every gallon of paint. This is a hit with prospective tenants.

So now I have a stinky house on my hands that I need to get smelling better.
I am going to paint all the walls, wipe down surfaces, clean and replace
carpeting as needed and air the place out.
The ceilings look pretty good so I don’t plan to repaint them.
My questions are:

  1. Do the ceilings need to be painted to get rid of the oder?
  2. Are their any special products or techniques to deal with this stinky
    problem?

Thanks in advance, Fun Bob

I’m rehabbing one now where the ceilings were actually stained brown from all the smoke (windows, light fixtures, etc. were also stained). Got my crews cleaning everything and applying a primer coat of oil-based Kilz paint. Actually, the house had sat empty for some time and it really didn’t have any significant smoke smell. Or maybe the smoke was just being masked by the dog urine smell. Good luck.
