I just bought a 15 ft moving truck for $2,500 for this purpose as well as hauling materials to and from supply houses.
I’m going to get it nicely painted and my marketing message on all sides.

I’m about half way through rehabing my first property. So far, everything is looking great. The only problem is that the dumpster has turned out to be my biggest expense and that’s after replacing the roof and most of the frame. We have removed almost every wall in the house and the entier roof, and not just the shingles, so there has been alot of debris but it’s only a 1000sqft house. The dumpster cost me a total of about $2600. I did’nt plan to spend more than $1000. We are through with all the major demolition and should’nt need a dumpster for the rest of this project but I’d like to avoid this ridicules expense next time if possible. The company I used was Trash-Bee-Gone and frankly, they were terrible. They even put the dumpster on my neighboor’s driveway and refused to move it for three days. But unfortunately, they were the only dumpster company that returned my calls. I’m in the Northeast FL area. If anyone knows a better way to get rid of debris I would be very greatful to know.

matt,
isn’t there some kind of new law in Florida forbidding price gauging in construction? Maybe you can check that out and bring it up in conversation with the dumpster guy?

continue to call all the available dumpster compamnies, even if they don’t return your calls. Get the biggest dumpster, around here 40 yards, that you’ll need so as not have to have multiple dumpsters. It saves in drop off fees/pickup fees. Look around other rehab/construction sites to see who supplies their dumpsters.

I always find it cheaper to hire someone who just hauls junk, under the table. Just pile it all up until you are done and have them come get it all.

I am seeing the same issues in my area since the hurricanes my dumpster fees have doubled. I am seriously thinking of buying a dump trailer. I figure I could recoupe my costs within a year or so. Although going to the dump isn’t my favorite errand.GL
Also shop around for your dumpster there are many newbies(hurricane formed) out there!GL

Sounds like the container company you used must be the only game in town if they are charging those prices. Unfortunately, I dont know any alternative so if you are forced to use them again, try to find out how they charge. Its usually a drop-off fee plus a charge per pound of debris. Also, I believe landfills have scales and give receipts to drivers that bring in dumpsters showing the weight of debris being dumped. Maybe requesting one of those would be a way to keep them honest. To put things in perspective, I used a 20’ rolloff several times over for a demo project and the drop-off/dump/return never exceeded $1500 and some of the loads the drivers picked up were so heavy they would jack the front tires up in the air until the rolloff was pulled up to balance the truck:)

Matt,
I assume, you’re talking about many dumpsters and not just one, right? I can get a small 12 cubicyard dumpster
for $ 175 and a 30 yard Dumpster will run me about $ 300.
If you actually paid $ 2600 for ONE Dumpster then you’re being taken.

I live in sunny SWFLA and use dumpsters all the time. The usual cost is 300 for a 20 yrd. dumper and 350 for a 30 yarder. Don’t know what the problem is. I do this almost every day. I use wci.

Try renting a big U-haul truck! I have found this to sometimes be
cheaper than a dumpster or calling a hauling guy out of the paper.
Just make sure you scrub it out good with soap and water before you
return it. Also, I would NOT tell them you didn’t haul furniture. What
they don’t know won’t hurt them.
