Usually this is done by vote of a board at a meeting of the HOA. Did you get notice of this meeting?

I recently learned that an HOA wherein I recently purchased a property at foreclosure sale revised their covenants effective 1/1/2011 to prohibit new rentals. This is a problem, as I was planning on renting this unit out for a couple of years. Is there some over arching law or legal principle that would trump this HOA covenant? Saying “they can change the covenants any way they want” is not strictly accurate, Federal Hair Housing laws are just one example where law trumps HOA covenants, so please don’t say that.
