Probably most towns and cities have in place an ordinance called Green River Ordinance (check it out on search engine. Interesting history), that is designed to prevent door-to-door salesmen.
But, even if your town/city has such, it’s still just a misdemeanor, and although you might get fussed at by the city atty, you’d probably be able to just hang your literature on door knobs, etc., with no hassle.
By the way, one can find clear plastic door know hanger sleeves, so you can load and hang quickly.
