Federal Commutations Commission
I have been asked this question several times by my staff and I would like to find out for myself if what I’m about to ask is legal or not?
Supervisors and above and some secretary have been given permission to access our network from their home computers through the Internet the concern is that they can have access to personal informational Address,SSN,DOB and so on and with the new generation of cell phones or PDA’s or like my new phone it’s not called any of the above it’s called a pocket PC and it can do almost everything my PC can do. So my question is is it legal the phones that are called PC’s to access the network through their pocket PC through the Internet like they do with their home PC’s? Either way the staff have access to all the same personal information!
Thanks
Todd Duskin

Westlaw & Lexus @ law libraries - Posted by John Merchant

There are 2 big databases that are available to anybody via paid subscription…Westlaw and Lexus (sp?).
Every law school library will have one of these 2 online court decision databases and public is normally welcome to use any & every lawschool law library, as per its internal rules. May or may not be small fee charged non-students for its use.
Also nearly every county law library (at courthouses)and larger law firms will have the state statutes and Federal Law and the West Reporter book series that reports every appellate court decision, state and federal in your state.
As a taxpayer, the courthouse law library computers and its books are available for use by anybody; the lawyers offices would perhaps be willing to allow friends to use their systems at times not predictably needed by their lawyers.
Here’s how to use the West Reporters that are found in every law library:
Find the statute or Fed Law on point in your Annotated Statutes or Fed Laws.
Then check, following the stat or law itself, to see if there have been court decisions on it, which the annotated statutes/laws always so.
Next find the court decis (e.g. 350 NW3d 409) and pull it and read that appellate court decision that will tell you what that court said about that stat or law (Fed statutes are called laws).
This is done automatically in the 2 database online systems so it’s faster than going to find the West Reporter and the court decisions, one by one.
Online, the statute comes up along with every (to this minute) appeals court decision citing that statute.
I’m never sure whether the car or database is spelled Lexus/Lexis ;)but the law library will have it or Westlaw so spelling won’t be critical.
Good luck “briefing” your legal point.
