Is it legal in NJ for an owner to live in his furnished basement (including kitchen) and rent out the other units of that property (2-3 family)?

If it is legal, and a property is purchased with an unfinished basement, would the owner need to re-zone or take any other legal actions in order to legally make a basement apartment for himself?

Thanks in advance,
Thad

Why wouldn’t you talk to P&Z in city or county where this property is? They’ll have the answer for you a lot quicker when they know the address.

A trip to courthouse or city hall should get you the answer quickly.
