Can my wife be a notary??? - Posted by Doug Worden
Posted by Doug Worden on July 24, 2001 at 20:12:53:
I was curious if my wife can be a notary and notarize documents for me when meeting with buyers and sellers. She is an officer of the corporation I will be using to L/O property…so I think there would be a conflict there.
Any advice is welcome.
What do most people do? Bring a notary to the sellers meeting?? Bring the seller to a notary?
Thanks

In Illinois it is allowed by statute.

If you pick a title agent or attorney that you give business too they’ll often assist with notarizing for free. Just a thought.
Depends on your state but doubtful… - Posted by Kim (FL)

Your state has specific rules on their notaries. I’m a notary in the state of Florida and I can’t notarize anything for my family members. I must say I have for family members that don’t have the same last name as I do for silly stuff like school records or medical releases for college or whatever. I bet all states have a rule on family members.
My advice would be to find a friend and pay for them to be a notary and ask them to help you by meeting with sellers when necessary. I do that for my friends because I’m a nice gal!
