I am a renter. I had mold growing in between the tub/toilet and the caulking after 8 months. My fault?? I scraped it, re-caulked, took minutes. Cost $15 max. Is your tenant capable of this? Do you want them to do this, re-grout your b-room? Especialy after you refuse to pay. Nice job… Just do it. PS Mold is not grease or dirt. Caused by poor ventilation, cheap grout (old, not mold resistent) Common sense, to me, says to fix it right.
Bathroom Mold Responsibility: Landlord or Tenant? - Posted by Jim Barber

My city inspection department wrote me a letter saying that the landlord is responsible for keeping the mold off the tenant’s bathroom tile after the tenant complained to them. I say the inspector is full of it and out of his freaking mind. That means that every landlord has to PLAY MAID to every tenant and if you do this for one tenant then every tenant is going to demand to have their bathroom tiles cleaned of mold. The tenants are under rent control and are purposely harassing the landlords in this city knowing quite well that they will get $4500 per person if they are evicted under any reason other than nonpayment of rent.
Has anyone ever come across this issue where the tenant has demanded to have his bathroom cleaned of mold and then complained to the city inspection department.
I am going to try to get a lawyer’s statement in writing saying that the city inspection department is completely wrong.
Anyone know what the legality of this issue is. Common sense tells me that if tenants develop mold in their bathrooms after living there for a long period of time then they are the ones that caused it. If they get grease in the kitchen or any other dirt or damage then it is their fault, not the landlords. I don’t know what this world is coming to.
