Looking at a 2 family today with asbestos siding - rehab possibility? Is this siding a concern or can it be covered
with vinyl or other siding?

If you have to replace any of the asbetsos pieces, they make replacement pieces that are not asbestos but look like the old stuff. I found it hard to find though when i did this several years ago.

Hi Brain,

When the house all ready has the asbestos siding here are a couple of options to consider:

  1. if in good condition…don’t worry about it. You can paint on top of it. Just like post below says.

  2. if just a few pieces are broken and missing…rob a couple from another part of the house (down low to ground) that doesn’t show as much. Replace this area with another material or feature and landscape around.

  3. if large areas are broken or missing…just use siding (vinyl, alum or wood) over entire wall. You do not have to remove the existing asbestos siding to do this.

Only if any asbestos material is “friable” (broken, peeling, flaky) do you have be concerned.

Here is a small easily digetable article about asbestos in a residential setting:

Hope this helps

One of my rentals is a duplex with asbestos siding. I think it is a very good siding. No concerns, plan on leaving it there. It looks decent, paints well.

If you’re gonna remove it, there may be local regualtions concerning that.

Best bet is put Vinyl over it, leave it alone and cover it up.

As long as it is in good condition and looks OK, I would just leave it, paint it if necessary. It shouldn’t be a problem.

As far as removing it, some places consider asbestos to be a hazardous waste and you have to remove it a cerain way. In others it’s no big deal. Check with your county government.
